We start feeling run-down and slow when our digestive systems don’t absorb nutrients properly. When this happens the body’s major organs don’t receive the nutrients they need to function optimally and enable the body to utilize the food to produce a high level of energy. The digestive, lymphatic, and circulatory systems, liver, adrenal gland, pancreas and kidneys all have to be functioning well for you to feel healthy and energetic.

The reason we suffer from overloaded systems is that we lead very fast-paced lives, and on top of it our bodies are bombarded with stress, bad diets and environmental toxins.

If you really want to get going with a detoxification program, have some blood, saliva and urine tests done to find out the state of body’s systems. And if you still don’t think you need to clean out at least your colon and intestines, find out what your ‘biological age’ is according to those tests – you could be in for a surprise as detoxers of around age 40, for example, have found out that their ‘biological age’, according to the tests, showed them to be 55 and older!

It is, therefore, very important to realize that your body has to be cleared of toxins, acids released from the connective tissue and your digestive system of overload stress.

When you start to detoxify your system you could experience a worsening of the symptoms you’re trying to get rid of, but within four days they normally go away. Constipation can sometime occur halfway through the course, but if you persist it should clear up soon and you’ll feel a lot better than when you started the detox.

Some first diet guidelines for detoxing include the following:

- Chew your food thoroughly – the first stage of digestion starts in the mouth with saliva.
- Drink very little while eating. Some dietitians believe that too much fluid dilutes the digestive enzymes and interferes with digestion.
- Eat organic food as processed food contains toxins
- Drink more water (between meals) up to around 1 and a half liters a day.
- Eat more grains
- Eat fresh vegetables, preferably steamed.
- Eat fruit, ripe and in season and preferably on an empty stomach
- Eat less animal protein.

Detox programs can be beneficial when done from as little as 2 days up to six weeks. A two- to three-day juice fast at the change of every season will help to relieve headaches and make you feel lighter and more alert.

A basic detox program of 7 days would consist of the following:

Days 1 and 2. Drink only pure spring or filtered water, water with lemon, herbal tea and diluted fruit juices (half water, half juice), making sure you drink at least eight glasses of fluid per day.

Days 3 to 7. Add brown rice, fruits and veggies. Vegetables, like broccoli,  sprouts and cauliflower, are particularly helpful to the liver. And try to get organic foods. Avoid strawberries and citrus fruit, except for lemons.
